The Young Artist movement is an art movement initiated by a Dutch painter who lived in Ubud for a long time, namely Arie Smit. Beginning in 1960, Arie Smit invited young children from the Penestanan Ubud Customary Village to express their creativity about the nature and rice fields of Ubud in beautiful paintings. The children were allowed to freely express their feelings based on their own experiences. This spontaneity became a very strong foundation in creating a work with the purity of instinct and the imagination of innocent children. The themes of Young Artist paintings are drawn from everyday life, especially from the nature and activities of the Ubud community, the majority of whom were farmers at that time. It is on this basis that the name of the art movement “Young Artist” emerged, lived, and developed within the community in the Penestanan area. This is because this art movement is truly influenced by the emotions and imagination of children who tend to like bright and free colors.
This painting depicts the Calonarang, where the essence of the story revolves around the battle between good energy (embodied by the Barong) and evil energy (embodied by the Rangda). Ultimately, there is neither defeat nor victory. This signifies the balance between the two sides of the world that must exist and complement each other, much like yin and yang—they exist for the equilibrium of the world.

The terraced rice fields in Bali may not seem like ‘real’ tourist activities, but they truly represent a significant opportunity to support the arts, culture, and local traditions that have existed for centuries.
Here, you can also witness the unique irrigation system that gives the lush green hues resembling jade, emerald, limestone, and olive green that you’ll see cascading down the fields. Destinations like Bali also never disappoint when it comes to stunning photography

This painting depicts the activity of women in the past preparing offerings. Balinese women have always been devoted to the duty of preparing offerings to God (Hindu). In Balinese Hindu tradition, these offerings are made to express gratitude to God and ancestors for everything we have received in this world. The style of this painting is the traditional Ubud Bali style, which has its own uniqueness. What is distinctive is the lifelike figures and soft colors. Black and white coloring is a process that must be undergone prior to coloring. This is intended to clarify the objects in terms of light and dark or contrast in every visual position of the painting.
